United vs. Bayern early team news
Early team news: United v Bayern
The attention of Erik ten Hag and co will be beginning to turn to Manchester United’s next outing: the crucial UEFA Champions League tie at home to Bayern Munich.
The Reds need to win Tuesday’s matchday-six clash to stand any chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition, while hoping for a draw in the other Group A fixture between FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
Ahead of the visit of the German champions, we may receive a fresh team-news update from Erik ten Hag during Monday’s pre-match press conference at Carrington, which you will be able to watch live on ManUtd.com, MUTV and in the United App.
In that media briefing, the boss could be asked for an update on the availability of defender Victor Lindelof, who missed Saturday’s loss to AFC Bournemouth with the injury he picked up during last week’s victory against Chelsea.
Luke Shaw partnered Premier League Player of the Month Harry Maguire at centre-back versus Bournemouth in Lindelof’s absence, while Raphael Varane was fit enough to return to the bench following a recent back problem. Jonny Evans was introduced late on and is also set to provide a defensive option in midweek.
Marcus Rashford was a doubt before the meeting with the Cherries due to illness but did make the matchday squad and was brought on in the second half.
Our no.10 is eligible for selection in the Champions League once more after missing United’s last outing in the competition, the 3-3 draw away to Galatasaray, as a result of the red card he was shown in Copenhagen on matchday four.
Rasmus Hojlund was another attacking player tasked with making an impact off the bench over the weekend, with the forward replaced in the starting XI by Anthony Martial.
Hojlund came on for the Frenchman after half-time and could return from the off on Tuesday as the Champions League’s joint-top scorer so far this season, with five goals.
Captain Bruno Fernandes picked up his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season in the Bournemouth defeat, which will see him suspended for next weekend’s trip to Liverpool. That ban, however, does not apply to European competition, making him available to skipper the side in midweek.
Young winger Amad returned to first-team training last week but wasn’t involved on Saturday, while midfielders Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount have also recently been on the sidelines.
Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia are not set to return until 2024.
BAYERN TEAM NEWS
Our visitors have already secured qualification to the next stage as Group A winners, so it will be interesting to see what sort of team Thomas Tuchel opts to select.
Although the standings may not leave them with much business to do on matchday six, they will certainly be looking to put in a strong performance in response to a chastening 5-1 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend.
Former Arsenal and West Brom winger Serge Gnabry picked up a groin strain in that Bundesliga match which will see him miss the trip to Manchester, as will Bouna Sarr who has recently had knee surgery.
However, the return from a muscle injury by talented midfielder Jamal Musiala against Frankfurt was a positive for Tuchel, who is also set to speak to the media on Monday.
Defender Matthijs de Ligt has been pictured training since picking up a knee problem last month, although he is yet to make his matchday comeback.
