Merson thinks Liverpool will struggle against Arsenal if 24-year-old doesn’t start

Paul Merson believes that Liverpool may struggle unless Jurgen Klopp picks one player in particular when they face Arsenal this weekend. The Premier League’s top two meet at Anfield, with the winner more than likely to spend Christmas Day at the summit of the table.Darwin Nunez will be looking to end a run of 11 games without a goal in all competitions for the Reds when the Gunners come to Merseyside.

Paul Merson thinks Darwin Nunez needs to start against Arsenal

The Uruguayan is yet to really live up to expectations at Liverpool, with 22 goals in 67 games so far. And given the amount of depth Liverpool now have in attack, some may feel that Nunez should not start against Mikel Arteta’s side this weekend.

However, Paul Merson has told Sportskeeda that Nunez may be key to Liverpool’s hopes of getting a positive result against Arsenal, noting that he could cause problems for the Gunners’ two centre-backs.

“Klopp has a few big selection calls to make. I think he is going to keep playing Darwin Nunez because you need to have height in the team. They will need to make their set-pieces count and it’s going to be difficult against the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel without a physical presence like Nunez,” he said.

Liverpool need striker to find his goalscoring touch again

Nunez is yet to prove himself as the world-class goalscorer who could take Liverpool to the next level. But he brings a lot to the side.

Only four players in the Premier League have had more attempts on goal so far this season, according to FB Ref. And actually, no-one averages more shots per 90 minutes than the 24-year-old.

So he is often getting himself in the right positions. And if he can find that lethal touch, Liverpool could have a real game-changer in their ranks.

This weekend would definitely be a fantastic time for Nunez to discover that lethal touch again.
