Manchester United will be looking to end 2023 on a high when they travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
During the first half of the year, United won the Carabao Cup and finished inside the Champions League places as Erik ten Hag’s maiden campaign at the helm proved to be a success. But the Red Devils have struggled so far this season and sit sixth, 11 points off leaders Liverpool. Tuesday’s 3-2 victory over third-place Aston Villa wouldn’t have done the confidence inside the dressing room any harm whatsoever though.
It’s still been a disappointing start for United and in an attempt to improve their fortunes, they could dip into the January transfer window to sign more players. However, they might be busier on the outgoings front, with several players linked with moves away, whether that be on loan or permanently.
With that in mind, here is the latest rumours from Old Trafford.
Getafe want Greenwood
Getafe have told Manchester United they want to buy Mason Greenwood for £40m, according to The Sun.
Greenwood has impressed since joining Getafe on loan in the summer, scoring five goals and providing four assists in 15 appearances. Barcelona and Real Madrid have expressed an interest in signing the 22-year-old, but Getafe are keen to recruit the England international on a permanent deal in January.
However, the Sun report that United want to keep Greenwood’s deal as a loan move until at least the end of the campaign. Greenwood starred for Getafe in their 3-3 draw against Atletico Madrid earlier this month, with Antoine Griezmann singing his praises after the match.
Greenwood’s move to Getafe came after United announced that he would recommence his career away from Old Trafford. The Red Devils had completed a six-month internal investigation on Greenwood after charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in February.
Hannibal allowed to leave
United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri will not be joining up with Tunisia for the Africa Cup of Nations, as his focus remains on sorting his club future.
Clubs from across Europe are keen on taking Hannibal on loan, including La Liga giants Sevilla. Freiburg and Lyon are also keeping tabs on the situation, as per Fabrizio Romano.
Hannibal has scored one goal in 10 appearances for United this season, and came off the bench for the final minute of the Red Devils’ 3-2 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday.
Martial’s Inter interest
Inter Milan are reportedly considering a move for Anthony Martial, who’s out of contract at Manchester United in the summer.
Gazzetta claim that high-flying Inter are monitoring the Frenchman’s situation, with United exploring the possibility of recruiting a backup striker in January. The Red Devils could also extended Martial’s contract by a further year by triggering a clause in his current deal.
Martial has scored two goals in 19 appearances for United this season.
