Walker: AS A TEAM, WE MUST DEFEND

Kyle Walker has acknowledged that the amount of goals City has given up in recent games has left the players unhappy.

Stones are “ready,” but Guardiola isn’t sure about Doku.

We have now allowed 10 goals in our last four games across all competitions, following our 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

With City conceding the joint fewest goals in the Premier League, five in 13 Champions League games, and just one in the FA Cup, their success in winning the Triple Crown last season was firmly established at the back.

Similar to that, we started our 2023–24 season with just eight goals given up in our first 11 Premier League games prior to the current run.

But due to late goals in draws against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Spurs, the Blues have given up the top spot in the Premier League, with Arsenal, their rivals from the previous season, now leading by three points.

Walker says that if we want to start keeping clean sheets again, it will take more than just the men in the back. This is in preparation for our trip to fourth-place Aston Villa on Wednesday night. He said, “As defenders, we’re disappointed, but with Rodri, you don’t defend like a back five or back six.”

“The entire 11 players on the field must defend. The manager says you have to play defense and then send the entire 11 out to attack.

Pep: “I think we’re going to win the Premier League this year.”

Because everyone is involved in the game, you can occasionally see our goalkeeper attacking and playing the passes. We can’t be happy as defenders because we give up too many goals, especially late goals.

In the crucial moments, sometimes you have to rely on concentration as well. In the past, we most likely would run the clock down and keep the ball in the corner for five minutes.

It’s football, and the beauty of football is that there’s always another game to make up for it, starting on Wednesday against a tough opponent.”

Under Pep Guardiola, City have been the dominant force in the Premier League, winning five of the seven titles since his arrival in Manchester.

We went one step further last year, winning the Champions League for the first time and a historic Treble.

This season, we have already won the UEFA Super Cup, and later this month, in Saudi Arabia, we will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Walker maintains that the players are still as hungry as ever and that our recent defensive problems are not the result of complacency in spite of all of this success.

As I enter my seventh season, we have five Premier League titles under our belt. Do I think I’m becoming too comfortable with myself? No, he said.

“There’s no better feeling in football than the celebrations at the end, looking back, and receiving the medals as you walk up onto that podium, which is why I want to go back and do it again,” the player said.

Doku also received the November Etihad player of the year award

“”I had to give up on winning more races after waiting for far too long to get my first medal, which turned into an addiction.

“The same applies to those who have been here for a long time, such as Bernardo, Eduardo, John, Kevin, etc. We need to transfer that knowledge to the incoming group of players or to the returning players so that we can continue moving forward.

We have standards; the manager sets his own and the team’s standards; you should set your own and the team’s standards together.

Are the performances really that poor, in my opinion? Having ten shots in the first half against Spurs was an extremely impressive display of dominance.

You have to learn to ride out the storm because they will inevitably emerge and alter somewhat in the second half. But was the first half of the game really 3-1? I firmly believed that.

Walker has played a major role in that accomplishment and, in Kevin De Bruyne’s absence, is currently the Blues’ captain.

With 15 major awards under his belt, the England international has made 274 appearances for City and is among the most decorated players in the team’s history.

Walker is not ready to accept his current situation, even though he is well aware of the legacy left by being a member of this historic team.

“Winning trophies was the project that I started for myself personally in 2017 when I signed for City,” he stated.

“I would have been ecstatic if you had told me in 2017 that I would win one Premier League.”

“Until we finish football, I don’t think we will truly realize what we have accomplished as a team and as a club for everything we have gone through.”

“Since I played in the Premier League, Manchester United, Leicester, and Chelsea have all won once. After that, City may win, followed by Chelsea.

“Teams have never won consecutive titles. It’s the fourth time in a row that nobody has done this.”

“There is pressure, but that is part of the reason we are on this team. We ought to seize this opportunity to push ourselves and set new records.”

  • “I still have work to do at Manchester City.” I think this team and I still have a lot more left in us to win more championships, and I want to be a part of that.”
