Raphael Varane’s Como Debut Marred by Early Injury, Echoing Manchester United Struggles

Raphael Varane’s debut for Como in the Coppa Italia against Sampdoria turned disastrous as the former Manchester United defender was forced off the pitch just 23 minutes into the match with a suspected knee injury. Varane, who left United in June after his contract expired, joined the Serie A newcomers last month on a two-year deal.

Lining up alongside notable names like Pepe Reina, Alberto Moreno, Patrick Cutrone, and Andrea Belotti, Varane had hoped to make a strong impression. However, his injury-riddled past at United seemed to resurface, as he hobbled off the field with assistance from two physios, replaced by Edoardo Goldaniga.

Como’s fortunes didn’t improve after Varane’s exit, as they soon conceded to Sampdoria’s Nicholas Ioannou. Although Cutrone equalized just before halftime, Como eventually fell to Sampdoria in a penalty shootout, ending their Coppa Italia run.

Varane’s injury is a significant setback as he aimed to revive his career in Italy. During his three seasons at Manchester United, Varane was plagued by injuries, missing 48 matches and never surpassing 24 Premier League appearances in a single season. Despite these struggles, he made 95 appearances, winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, and leaving with fond memories of his time at Old Trafford.

Reflecting on his United career, Varane expressed deep affection for the club and its supporters, noting that Old Trafford will always hold a special place in his heart.
