Pep Guardiola Approves Matheus Nunes’ Potential Move to Liverpool After Failed Transfer Bids

Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes has emerged as a key target for Liverpool, with recent developments suggesting a transfer could be imminent. Nunes, who joined City in the summer of 2023, has struggled for regular playing time, making just nine Premier League starts last season. His situation is further complicated by the return of Ilkay Gundogan, who rejoined City after a brief stint at Barcelona.

Liverpool, alongside Chelsea, West Ham United, and Everton, have shown interest in acquiring the 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder. Despite a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, Nunes is reportedly keen on staying in the Premier League to revitalize his career.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, is said to have given the green light for Nunes’ potential departure, acknowledging that he cannot guarantee the player a significant role this season. This decision aligns with recent moves by City to offload players such as Julian Alvarez, Liam Delap, Kalvin Phillips, and Tommy Doyle.

Guardiola has hinted that City may not make further signings before the transfer window closes next Friday unless injuries or unexpected opportunities arise. He stated, “I don’t know what’s going to happen; maybe something occurs due to injuries, or the market presents an unexpected offer that suits us financially or tactically.”

Liverpool have been long-time admirers of Nunes, having attempted to secure his services in the summer of 2022 before he ultimately signed with Wolves. The Reds had hoped to revive their interest this summer, but a clause in his contract, which would have facilitated the transfer, was removed by Wolves. Nunes is now valued at around £44 million, making him a significant acquisition for any interested club.
