Following a successful test event earlier this week and the granting of the new stand’s operating license, Liverpool’s new Anfield Road stand is scheduled to partially open for their match against Manchester United on Sunday, following a three-month delay.

Anfield’s capacity will increase to 57,000 with the partial opening, enabling the team to break the current record for attendance. The club credits a 1973 First Division match against Leicester City with 56,202 as the largest ever.

In February 1952, 61,905 people attended an FA Cup match between Liverpool and Wolves at Anfield, setting a record for the largest attendance ever. The official capacity of the newly reopened Anfield Road end is expected to be slightly under 61,000 when it is fully operational again.

The new Anfield Road end was supposed to open in September, but that date was pushed back due to the construction company Buckingham Group going into administration over the summer. Instead, a partial opening is anticipated in the new year.

Positive news for the club and supporters, a partial opening for Manchester United this weekend—and for any subsequent matches over the next month or two as the rest of the stand is finished—comes about a month ahead of the revised schedule.
