Chelsea midfielders Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia came under fire from Jurgen Klopp for their choice to turn down Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

Brighton and Liverpool had an August agreement worth £111 million, but Caicedo declined a move to Anfield and ultimately signed a £115 million contract to join Chelsea..

During a Q&A in front of Liverpool supporters at Anfield on Monday evening, Klopp shared a laugh with fans as he referenced ‘other central defensive midfielders don’t want to join Liverpool’ when talking about the decision to sign Wataru Endo.

‘The summer we had with a few strange things happen in the transfer market but here between us I can say: ‘My god we were lucky’,’ Klopp said.

‘We didn’t know that in the moment, to be honest, we didn’t realise in that moment. But I am really happy it worked out like that. You never know if it will work out like that.

‘I had an extremely good feeling before we started pre-season, we already had Macca and Dom already in and then we knew there was a chance for Ryan. Then we obviously realised other central defensive midfielders don’t want to join Liverpool… yeah, you see what happens.

‘We located Endo. He is a fantastic player who is thirty years old, experienced, and the captain of Japan. However, it isn’t possible, even though he isn’t the first choice due to the nature of the transfer market; we don’t choose a player who is thirty years old, plays in Germany, and was almost demoted. Thank heavens, though, we took a second, closer look at the situation, and this boy expressed a strong desire to attend, which is helpful.

We now have a team with highly experienced players—some of whom are still young—as well as a group of people who are driven and passionate and will stop at nothing to help this team succeed. If you will, we can call this group our new leadership group.

“We need to try to accomplish something exceptional right now.”
