Manchester United in talks to sign a “world-class” midfielder as Mainoo’s partner.

Manchester United in further talks for PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Manchester United have held further talks with Paris Saint-Germain regarding midfielder Manuel Ugarte, but no final agreement has been reached yet, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Ugarte, who joined PSG for €60 million from Sporting last summer, had a challenging first season in Paris, starting only 21 Ligue 1 games. This underwhelming performance has led to speculation about his future, with United showing interest in the Uruguayan.

The 23-year-old is reportedly keen on moving to Old Trafford, and talks have been ongoing for about a week. The primary issue in negotiations appears to be the transfer fee, with PSG aiming to recoup close to their initial investment, while United seeks a deal around £45 million. Despite this, a compromise is expected as the clubs get closer to an agreement.

Ugarte, who had an impressive 2022/23 season with Sporting, is eager to revive his career with a potential move to United. PSG manager Luis Enrique reportedly considers Ugarte surplus to requirements, whereas the Red Devils have offered him a significant role in their midfield.

With Casemiro expected to leave for the Saudi Pro League, United’s hierarchy sees Ugarte as a potential replacement in Erik ten Hag’s squad. Sky Sports reporter Plettenberg mentioned on X (formerly Twitter) that while discussions are progressing, the terms of the deal are still being negotiated.

If Ugarte joins United, he could form a long-term midfield partnership with 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo. INEOS aims to build a midfield core around Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and another key player, with support from Mason Mount, Scott McTominay, and Christian Eriksen.
