Manuel Ugarte vs. Sander Berge: Stats Reveal Key Transfer Decision for Man United

Manchester United face a crucial decision in their quest to strengthen their midfield before the transfer window closes. With over £150 million already spent on new recruits, including Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, Leny Yoro from Lille, and a £60 million double deal for Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, Erik ten Hag is now focusing on adding quality to the midfield.

Two key targets have emerged: Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain and Sander Berge of Burnley. According to Fabrizio Romano, United is in ongoing negotiations with PSG over Ugarte, but the reported £51.4 million asking price presents a challenge. If United cannot reduce this fee or secure additional funds through player sales, Berge, valued at around £30 million, might become the more feasible option.

Statistical comparisons between Ugarte and Berge reveal distinct differences in their playing styles. Ugarte averages 60.01 passes per 90 minutes with a success rate of 91.1%, outperforming Berge’s 47.35 passes at 88.2% accuracy. Ugarte’s superior passing stats reflect his role in a more dominant team, while Berge’s progressive passes (5.03 per 90) and carries (1.98 per 90) indicate a more forward-driving approach.

Defensively, Ugarte excels with 4.19 tackles and 1.89 interceptions per 90 minutes, compared to Berge’s 2.35 tackles and 0.71 interceptions. However, Berge surpasses Ugarte in blocks, clearances, and aerial duels. From an attacking standpoint, Berge also provides more threat, with a higher non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists (0.13 per 90) and shot-creating actions (2.07 per 90).

Given United’s defensive struggles last season, Ugarte’s ability to disrupt play and break up opposition attacks may offer a more suitable solution for Ten Hag’s midfield needs.
