OFFICIAL: Ilkay Gundogan, 33, announces his retirement from the German national team

Ilkay Gundogan, 33, has officially retired from the Germany national team. He announced his decision on his X account, reflecting on his career with pride.

“Dear soccer fans of Germany,

After weeks of reflection, I’ve decided it’s time to end my national team career. I’m proud to have earned 82 caps since my debut in 2011—something I could never have imagined.

Captaining the team at our home European Championships last summer was the highlight of my career. After years of effort, it was incredible to help make the nation proud again.

However, even before the tournament, I began to feel a certain fatigue, both physically and mentally. With the relentless schedule of club and national games, it became clear that this was the right time to step back.

I’ll always support the national team and believe we can be strong contenders at the 2026 World Cup. We have a fantastic coach, a talented squad, and great team spirit.

Thank you to all the fans, staff, coaches, and players who have supported me along this journey.

It has been an honor.

Thank you, Germany!

Your Ilkay”
