Pep Guardiola May Facilitate Transfer of $71M Star to Liverpool, Praised by Jurgen Klopp

Matheus Nunes’ tenure at Manchester City is facing uncertainty following the surprising return of Ilkay Gundogan, which could pave the way for a transfer to Liverpool. Gundogan rejoined City on a free transfer from Barcelona earlier this week, a move that might push Nunes further down the midfield hierarchy.

Nunes, who signed for City from Wolves last year in a $71 million (£54 million) deal, struggled for regular game time under Pep Guardiola, making only 17 league appearances last season. With Gundogan’s return complicating his prospects, Nunes’ future is now under intense scrutiny.

According to the Daily Star, Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham, and Everton have expressed interest in the Portuguese international. While Newcastle has been monitoring Nunes, their current offer is limited to a loan deal. Liverpool, which showed interest during Nunes’ time at Wolves, is now a prominent contender, potentially positioning itself to finalize a move before the transfer window closes.

Despite rejecting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, Nunes remains frustrated by his limited role at City and is eager for a fresh start in the Premier League. Guardiola, who has already seen players like Julian Alvarez and Kalvin Phillips depart, has indicated that he cannot offer Nunes more than a minor role this season. This aligns with his approach to player departures, as seen with recent exits.

City’s transfer activity has been minimal despite the departures, with Savinho joining alongside Gundogan. Guardiola has suggested that further additions are unlikely unless unforeseen circumstances arise, such as injuries or a compelling market opportunity.

As Liverpool remains the only team in Europe’s top five leagues yet to make a signing, Jurgen Klopp is keenly eyeing potential recruits. Nunes could provide the midfield boost Klopp has been seeking, especially after a failed attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. With the transfer window closing soon, the arrival of Nunes could significantly impact Liverpool’s squad for the season ahead.
