The English FA considers hiring Pep Guardiola as England’s next manager, even if they have to wait

The English Football Association is reportedly eyeing Pep Guardiola as the next England manager following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. Southgate stepped down after eight years, stating it was “time for change and a new chapter.”

Speculation about his successor has intensified, with various names mentioned, but the FA seems focused on Guardiola. The Manchester City boss’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he has yet to confirm an extension. Despite wanting a quick replacement, the FA is willing to wait for Guardiola, according to The Independent. In the interim, Under-21s manager Lee Carsley is the likely candidate to step in.

Although Guardiola is a top target, he isn’t the current favorite. Eddie Howe is seen as the most popular choice, with other potential candidates including Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, and even Jurgen Klopp, suggested by Gary Lineker. Additionally, Sarina Wiegman, the current England women’s team manager, has been proposed.

As for Southgate, he plans to take a break from football but has recently been offered a pundit role on ITV.
