The rest of the Premier League should be on guard against Kevin De Bruyne in his revamped position for Manchester City this season.
As Manchester City continue their quest for dominance in the Premier League, Pep Guardiola’s tactical innovations remain a key factor in their success. This season, Guardiola has unveiled a fresh role for Kevin De Bruyne that has already started to unsettle opposition teams.
Known for his tactical brilliance, Guardiola consistently adapts his strategies to maximize the effectiveness of his squad. With Erling Haaland creating space through his imposing presence and pace, Guardiola ensures the Norwegian remains high up the pitch, enabling his teammates to capitalize on the extra room.
This season, however, the focus has shifted to De Bruyne. Traditionally a central figure, the Belgian playmaker has been deployed in a more unconventional role, especially evident in recent matches against Chelsea and Ipswich Town. De Bruyne has been seen operating predominantly on the left-hand side of the pitch, resembling a left-wing position rather than his usual central midfield role.
Guardiola’s experimentation includes a 3-1-6 system in which De Bruyne, along with Rico Lewis, has taken up wide positions in a midfield diamond. This positioning allows De Bruyne to contribute both defensively and offensively, enhancing City’s build-up play from the back and creating chances from the flanks.
Against Ipswich, De Bruyne’s new role was particularly effective. He balanced his responsibilities between helping City transition from defense and orchestrating attacks. His positioning drew opposition players away from key areas, creating space for Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva. Notably, De Bruyne assisted Haaland’s second goal with a precise pass from what appeared to be a left-back position.
Guardiola’s tactical tweak seems to be a strategic response to De Bruyne’s age and past injuries, utilizing his exceptional vision and passing range while mitigating the physical demands of a central role. This adjustment could force Premier League managers to rethink their defensive strategies, as De Bruyne’s influence from deeper positions poses a new threat.
As Manchester City continues to evolve under Guardiola’s guidance, the rest of the Premier League should brace for the challenges posed by De Bruyne’s revitalized role.
