Will the Warriors Secure Contract Extensions Before Deadline?

With the 2024 NBA offseason winding down, the Golden State Warriors are gearing up for the season opener on October 23. General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. is busy exploring trades and considering roster upgrades. However, an important deadline is approaching: October 21, the last day for extension-eligible players to finalize new deals.

The Warriors face key decisions regarding three players. Steph Curry is eligible to add a year to his current contract, potentially worth $62.6 million, extending through the 2025-26 season. Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody are eligible for maximum rookie extensions of up to five years and around $225 million, though this figure varies with the cap.

If no agreements are reached by the deadline, negotiations will be deferred until next offseason. At that point, Curry will be in the final year of his contract, while Kuminga and Moody will become restricted free agents.

  1. Steph Curry: Curry’s extension is relatively straightforward. The Warriors are prepared to offer him the additional year if he chooses. The decision rests solely with Curry. While the extension provides financial security, it also limits his flexibility. Talks are expected to resume closer to training camp, but all signs suggest Curry aims to remain with the Warriors.
  2. Jonathan Kuminga: Kuminga’s situation is more complex. Despite previous doubts about his fit with the team, he’s now considered a key player. The Warriors face a dilemma similar to their past with Jordan Poole’s extension. Kuminga might prefer to wait and secure a better deal next summer if he performs well, making an immediate extension less certain.
  3. Moses Moody: Moody’s scenario mirrors Kuminga’s, though on a smaller scale. While valued, the Warriors haven’t given him a significant role. Moody might seek a larger opportunity elsewhere if the Warriors don’t present an attractive offer.

In summary, while Curry’s extension seems likely, Kuminga and Moody’s future remains uncertain, with decisions potentially extending into the next offseason.
